The advanced pickers have a clear idea of what they want to do with the instrument and generally come with a healthy appetite for new material. I really enjoy teaching advanced lessons because it is an opportunity to get into the nitty gritty of a single topic or concept. Since we’re striving for a complete understanding of a specific topic it may take a little longer to fully digest the information. Because of this sometimes it’s more appropriate to meet every other week so that you can get the most payoff for your time. That depends entirely on how much you play however, and if you’re spending a lot of time on the instrument the more material the better.

I classify advanced topics into one of three categories: guitar work, improving musicality, and music industry. Guitar work is self-explanatory, a technique or concept that applies directly to guitar playing. Concepts like harp harmonics or polychords fit in here. Musicality is anything that helps you become a stronger musician like Big Band arranging techniques or advanced ear training. An often overlooked but very important aspect of music is the business side. Music industry topics include how to register a copyright for your original songs or the importance of starting a publishing company.
